Five personnel of the National Park Service were killed on Tuesday night when suspected bandits stormed their office in Oloka, Orire LGA, Oyo State.
A wave of mourning has hit the National Park Service (NPS) following a brutal late-night attack on its personnel in Oloka, Orire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
On Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at approximately 9:00 PM, a group of yet-to-be-identified armed men suspected to be bandits stormed the old National Park Service office.
The assailants caught the officers on duty by surprise, leading to a violent confrontation.
Preliminary reports indicate that at least five personnel lost their lives in the assault. While some bodies have been identified, the Conservator of the Park, Tesleem Kareem, noted that the evacuation process is ongoing.
Fatalities: 5 officers confirmed dead.
Injuries: Several other staff members sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving medical attention.
Recovery: Efforts are currently focused on recovering the bodies of victims believed to be located within the dense surrounding forest.
The Oyo State Police Command has officially confirmed the incident. State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade, stated that the Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, along with other service chiefs, has personally visited the location.
To prevent further escalation and secure the Oloka axis, the following forces have been deployed:
Tactical Teams: Specialized units for tracking and neutralizng the attackers.
Mobile Police Force (PMF): For sustained presence and community protection.
Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD): To sweep the facility for any dangerous materials left behind by the bandits.
This attack marks a disturbing shift in the security situation within Oyo State’s forest fringes. The Old Oyo National Park shares boundaries with Kwara and Niger states, a corridor that has seen increasing bandit activity in recent months.
Only days prior, a major bandit attack in the Kabe district of Niger State left 30 dead, raising fears that these criminal groups are migrating southward into the Southwest region.
The Oyo State government has urged residents to remain calm and report any suspicious movements to the nearest security outpost as investigations into the identities of the attackers continue.
