CAF President Motsepe steps in as Burna Boy faces airport drama over jewelry before his Morocco AFCON concert.
Nigerian music superstar Burna Boy almost missed his big moment in Morocco after a brief run-in with airport authorities. The "African Giant" was reportedly held by customs officials over his signature gold jewelry.
The drama unfolded shortly after the singer landed in Rabat for the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Fan Zone concert. It took the personal intervention of the CAF President, Patrice Motsepe, to clear the air and get the show back on track.
Speaking at a media briefing, Motsepe shared the details of the encounter. He explained that he received an urgent call to help resolve a misunderstanding at the airport.
According to the CAF President, Moroccan customs officers were struck by the "heavy and beautiful gold jewellery" the singer was carrying. The sheer volume of the pieces prompted the officials to pause his entry for further questioning.
“I was called to intervene because Burna Boy was stopped at the airport,” Motsepe told reporters. He noted that the situation was handled professionally and resolved quickly once he stepped in.
Despite the temporary hitch, the Grammy-winning artist made it to the venue on time. On January 16, he delivered a high-energy performance that thrilled the crowd in Rabat.
The concert was a star-studded affair. Alongside Burna Boy, Ghanaian heavyweight Stonebwoy and Moroccan stars Stormy and Jaylann also took to the stage to celebrate the AFCON festivities.
