Security operatives in Enugu State have foiled a kidnapping attempt, killing one suspect during a fierce gun battle.
A major tragedy was averted on Sunday morning as security forces in Enugu State successfully stopped a kidnapping gang in their tracks.
The incident happened around 6:00 a.m. on January 18, 2026, along the busy Adani–Nsukka Road. Police officers from the Adani Division, working closely with the local Neighbourhood Watch Group, ran into the armed gang at the Ngene-Ukwu axis.
According to SP Daniel Ndukwe, the Police Public Relations Officer, the criminals had emerged from the bush to ambush a passing vehicle. However, they were met with a swift response from the joint security team.
A heavy gunfight broke out as the kidnappers tried to resist. In the heat of the battle, the security operatives "neutralized" one of the suspects.
While one kidnapper fell, his partners managed to escape into the thick forest, though many of them were seen fleeing with gunshot wounds.
After the dust settled, the police recovered an AK-47 rifle loaded with two rounds of live ammunition from the scene.
The Enugu State Police Command has now launched a massive manhunt to track down the fleeing criminals. They are also calling on residents and hospital owners in the area to be on the lookout.
"If you see anyone with suspicious gunshot injuries, please report them to the nearest police station immediately," the Command urged.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, praised the team for their bravery and professional conduct.
He reassured the people of Enugu State that the police remain committed to flushing out violent criminals and keeping the roads safe for everyone.
