The Jigawa State Police Command has arrested a newly married woman in connection with the death of her husband, who reportedly fell ill and died after eating a meal prepared by her.

The incident occurred on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 pm in Gauza village, located in Jahun Local Government Area of the state.

According to the police, the deceased had his lunch at home before suddenly becoming seriously ill. He was rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical care but was confirmed dead while receiving treatment.

Confirming the development, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Jigawa State Command, SP Shi’isu Adam, said detectives from the Jahun Police Division arrested the wife of the deceased as the principal suspect shortly after the incident.

During interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison. She reportedly told investigators that she sent her cousin to purchase the substance used.

The police spokesperson further revealed that the suspect claimed she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she said contributed to her actions.

Following the confession, the Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a thorough and detailed investigation.

SP Adam said the suspect remains in police custody and will be charged to court once investigations are concluded.

Meanwhile, the police command has appealed to the public to remain calm and law-abiding. It advised individuals facing family or marital challenges to seek lawful and peaceful means of resolution.

The command warned against taking the law into one’s hands, noting that such actions often lead to irreversible consequences.

The Jigawa State Police Command also reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice and protecting lives and property across the state.
