NDLEA arrests Jeremiah Isaiah Nkanta with cannabis in Akwa Ibom

Barely three years after serving a jail term for drug trafficking, 80-year-old Jeremiah Isaiah Nkanta has once again been arrested by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, Nkanta was first apprehended on December 14, 2022, and sentenced to two years in prison by a Federal High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom. Despite his conviction, the octogenarian returned to the illicit trade.

Acting on credible intelligence, NDLEA operatives tracked him to his home in Mmanta-Abak village, Abak Local Government Area, on January 10, 2025.

He was found with 5.7 kilograms of skunk, a potent strain of cannabis, hidden in his residence.

In a separate operation, NDLEA officers intercepted a 37-year-old businessman, Ani Onyebuchi Romans, along the Oron-Ibaka road in Oron LGA on January 9.

Romans, who claimed to reside in Cameroun, was travelling with mannequins for his clothing business. A search revealed the mannequins were stuffed with 5.3 kilograms of tramadol.

Investigations showed he purchased the opioids in Onitsha, Anambra State, and was smuggling them into Cameroun after the holiday season.

These arrests underscore NDLEA’s intensified crackdown on drug trafficking across Akwa Ibom and beyond.
