Two police officers were killed in Enugu after gunmen attacked a patrol team, prompting an intensive manhunt by security forces.

Two police officers have been confirmed dead after a late-night attack on a patrol team in Enugu, marking another violent incident along a major road in the state.

The attack occurred on the night of January 15, 2026, along Agbani Road, where operatives of the Police Distress Response Squad were carrying out routine duties.

Police authorities said the officers were suddenly ambushed by armed suspects who opened fire without warning.

The patrol team responded immediately, engaging the attackers and forcing them to flee the scene with gunshot injuries.

During the exchange, the operational vehicle used by the officers caught fire. Two members of the team suffered severe gunshot wounds and were rushed to a hospital for urgent treatment. They were later pronounced dead by medical personnel.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa, ordered tactical and intelligence units to intensify efforts to track down the attackers.

He directed operatives to use all available resources and credible intelligence to ensure the suspects are arrested.

The police also confirmed the recovery of a Lexus RX 330 SUV allegedly stolen by the attackers and used during the assault. The vehicle was found riddled with bullet holes, believed to have been sustained during the gun duel.

CP Giwa appealed to residents of Enugu to support security agencies by providing useful information that could assist ongoing investigations. He assured the public that those responsible would be brought to justice.

The Enugu State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining public safety and urged citizens to continue cooperating with law enforcement as operations to apprehend the suspects continue.
