Akure Residents Nab Suspected Kidnapper Posing as Madman

Suspected kidnapper arrested in Oda Town near Ogbe High School, Akure

Residents of Oda Town in Akure have arrested a man they say was posing as a mentally ill person near Ogbe High School.

The suspect stayed in front of the school for about three days, neighbours told reporters. His prolonged presence raised alarm and people confronted him on Wednesday.

The arrest follows the disappearance of a child from Emiloro Community two weeks earlier, a case that has left the community anxious and alert.

Items shown in a local video include sweets, bottled drinks, a calabash, a small cage, clothes, a bag and a pair of shoes reportedly recovered from the man. The footage also shows what residents described as a charm tied around his waist.

When questioned, the suspect said he came from Olofin along Idanre Road and claimed he played football in that area. He also told residents he was searching for a younger brother in Oda Town.

Observers say the man displayed no obvious signs of mental instability while being questioned, leading some residents to suspect he was disguising his intent.

After the confrontation, community members handed the suspect to the Ondo State Security Network, Amotekun, in Akure. Amotekun officers are holding him for further investigation.

The incident has renewed calls for vigilance. Residents urged parents and guardians to monitor children’s movements and report any suspicious persons immediately.

Authorities have not released formal statements about charges. Amotekun’s investigation will determine whether the man is linked to the earlier disappearance.
