ASP, Four Others Killed in Benue Community Gunmen Attack

A senior police officer and four residents were killed during a violent gunmen attack in the Abande community of Benue.

The peace of the Abande community in Kwande Local Government Area was shattered on Tuesday following a violent raid by suspected herdsmen. 

The Benue State Police Command has now confirmed that five people lost their lives in the unfortunate incident.

Among those killed was an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) attached to the 13 Police Mobile Force in Makurdi. 

The officer was reportedly on a special assignment in the area when the attackers struck. Aside from the officer, four members of the local community also fell victim to the gunmen.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Edet Udeme, the command received a distress call on February 3. 

The report by DP, indicated that armed bandits had launched a coordinated assault on both security personnel and the villagers.

In a swift response to the tragedy, Commissioner of Police Ifeanyi Emenari has directed a massive security crackdown. A Deputy Commissioner of Police is now heading the operations in Jato-Aka, supported by additional mobile force personnel and Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs).

"Our teams are on the ground to secure the community and track down these perpetrators," the police spokesperson stated, adding that the bodies of the victims have been moved to the mortuary.

The command has expressed its deep condolences to the families of the deceased. While the area remains tense, the police have assured the public that they are doing everything possible to restore order and ensure justice is served.
