DSS Arrests El-Rufai Moments After EFCC Release in Abuja

Former Kaduna Governor Nasir El-Rufai arriving at the EFCC headquarters surrounded by supporters before his DSS arrest.

The former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, was taken into custody by the Department of State Services (DSS).

The arrest happened just moments after El-Rufai was granted bail by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) around 8 p.m on Wednesday.

Reports by premium times indicate that DSS operatives were already positioned at the EFCC headquarters, waiting for the former governor to finish his business with the anti-graft agency. As soon as he stepped out, he was whisked away.

While his earlier visit to the EFCC was about corruption allegations during his time as governor, this new arrest by the DSS appears to be a different matter entirely.

Obgist earlier report suggest that the DSS moved in because of claims that El-Rufai unlawfully monitored the phone calls of the National Security Adviser (NSA), Nuhu Ribadu.

This development adds a fresh layer to the ongoing friction between the two prominent figures. Just last Thursday, El-Rufai narrowly escaped an arrest attempt at the Abuja airport and later accused Ribadu of being the mastermind behind the move.

El-Rufai, who is now a major figure in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), had arrived at the EFCC office earlier on Monday with a large crowd of supporters.

He was there to respond to questions regarding his administration’s financial dealings. However, what started as a corruption probe has now shifted into a high-stakes security investigation.

The former governor’s legal team and supporters are yet to release a formal statement on this latest twist in his ongoing battles.
