At least 16 people are dead after Russia launched a massive aerial attack on Ukrainian cities, striking Kyiv and Odesa.
Russia has launched a massive aerial assault on Ukraine, leaving at least 16 people dead. The overnight attacks involved nearly 700 drones and dozens of missiles. Authorities say this is the largest barrage witnessed in nearly two weeks.
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed the operation was an act of retaliation. They stated it was a response to Ukrainian strikes deep inside Russian territory. Recent attacks by Ukraine have hit oil refineries and manufacturing plants.
In Kyiv, the capital city, the toll is particularly heartbreaking. A 12-year-old child was among four people killed in the strike. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that emergency teams rescued a mother and child from a damaged building. Firefighters battled blazes across multiple districts.
The southern port city of Odesa also suffered heavy losses. Officials confirmed that nine people died in that region. In Dnipro, a missile strike injured at least 27 people, with five in critical condition.
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that they downed 31 missiles and neutralized 636 drones. Despite these efforts, the sheer volume of the attack caused widespread damage. Residential and commercial buildings were not spared.
European Council President Antonio Costa described the events as a horrendous attack on civilians. The strikes occurred shortly after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy returned from a diplomatic trip to Europe.
Zelenskyy had visited Germany, Norway, and Italy to secure more support. He is now urging allies to provide additional air defense systems. He emphasized that Ukraine needs these resources daily to stop the aggression.
