Anthropic Nears $50B Round at $900B Valuation Before IPO

Anthropic's $50B funding round could value the Claude-maker above $900B, overtaking OpenAI ahead of a highly anticipated IPO.

Anthropic is moving quickly to secure its latest mega-funding round. The artificial intelligence company has given investors just 48 hours to submit their allocation requests.

‎Sources familiar with the matter say this round is expected to pull in roughly $50 billion. The entire deal is estimated to close within the next two weeks.

‎Previously, reports indicated that Anthropic was targeting a valuation of about $900 billion. However, investor demand is so fierce that the final valuation could easily surpass that figure.

‎If it hits that mark, Anthropic will more than double its last valuation of $380 billion, which was set during a funding round in February.

‎It would also comfortably beat its biggest rival, OpenAI. Earlier this year, OpenAI closed a record-breaking $122 billion round that valued it at $852 billion.

‎Despite the massive interest, not every investor is rushing to join this round. Some early backers, particularly those who put money into the company in 2024 or earlier, are stepping back.

‎Instead of buying more shares now, these early investors are waiting. They plan to cash out during Anthropic's anticipated Initial Public Offering, which is expected later this year.

‎This current fundraise is likely the company's last as a private entity. The fresh capital will be used to fund Anthropic's massive computing needs as the AI race heats up.

‎The company's financial numbers show just how fast it is growing. Earlier this month, Anthropic announced it had passed an annual revenue run rate of $30 billion.

‎However, insiders with direct knowledge of the company's finances say the reality is even stronger. They say the current run rate is actually closer to $40 billion.

‎Anthropic has declined to officially comment on the ongoing fundraising activities.
