Miss Universe Nigeria Chidimma Adetshina is now facing possible deportation from South Africa after immigration authorities alleged that she is living in the country without legal status.
The 25-year-old beauty queen appeared before the Cape Town Regional Court on June 9 following an arrest in the Summer Greens area. She was released on warning and is expected back in court on *July 16* as the Department of Home Affairs pushes ahead with legal steps to remove her from the country.
What Home Affairs Is Alleging
According to court documents, immigration officer Adrian Jackson told the court that officials located Adetshina and her minor son during an investigation. He said neither of them currently holds valid legal status to remain in South Africa.
Jackson stated that after interviews and a search of department records, officials concluded that Adetshina “has no lawful residential status.” He asked the court to confirm her detention for deportation.
The Earlier Home Affairs Decision
The case stems from a *March decision by Home Affairs Minister Dr. Leon Schreiber*, who dismissed Adetshina’s application to review the refusal of her request for a letter of good cause.
Schreiber said Adetshina was informed in September 2024 of plans to cancel her and her son’s South African identity documents, but she did not respond.
He further alleged that:
1. Passport Issue: She obtained a Nigerian passport before applying for a South African visitor’s visa.
2. Visa Rejection: The visa application was rejected after officials claimed she submitted a fraudulent bank statement.
3. No Appeal: She did not appeal and was later declared a prohibited person under immigration law.
4. Border Entry: She later entered South Africa through the Lebombo border from Mozambique while allegedly presenting herself as a South African citizen.
5. Son’s Status: Her son’s immigration status is tied to hers.
Current Court Conditions
As part of her release, the court ordered Adetshina to:
1. Remain at the address where she was arrested.
2. Notify immigration authorities of any changes to her residence, employment, or movements while the case is pending.
Who Is Chidimma Adetshina?
Adetshina rose to prominence after being crowned *Miss Universe Nigeria 2024*. She had previously been caught up in controversy during the Miss South Africa 2024 pageant over questions about her citizenship and eligibility, which led to her withdrawing from that competition.
Her legal battle in South Africa now puts her pageantry career and residency status under intense scrutiny.
What Happens Next
All eyes are now on the *July 16 court date*. If the court grants Home Affairs’ request, Adetshina and her son could be detained for deportation. If not, the case may proceed to a full hearing on her immigration status.
For now, the Miss Universe Nigeria titleholder remains in South Africa under strict release conditions as the legal process continues .
