US Judge Blocks Trump Immigration Restriction On 39 Countries

US judge blocks Trump immigration restriction on 39 countries, restoring legal pathways for thousands of affected immigrants.

US federal judge strikes down Trump immigration policy freezing benefits for 39 countries

A federal judge in the United States has delivered a massive blow to the Trump administration's immigration plans. On Friday, June 5, 2026, the court struck down a sweeping policy that had quietly locked thousands of immigrants out.

The controversial Immigration policy took effect in November 2025. It suspended the processing of key immigration benefits for people from approximately 39 countries. Asylum applications, work permits, green cards, and citizenship requests were all put on hold.

Why did the government do this? The administration pointed to a shooting in Washington, D.C., that claimed the lives of two National Guard members. They used the tragedy to justify the massive immigration restriction, claiming it was a matter of national security.

The 39 countries targeted are predominantly in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. The government labelled them as high-risk nations. But many of the people affected by this freeze had been living lawfully in the United States for years.

The reality on the ground was painful. Because their applications were frozen, lawful residents could not renew their work authorisation or move forward with their legal status. Many lost their jobs.

Over six months later, countless families were left without work, without legal standing, and completely unable to plan their futures.

U.S. District Chief Judge John McConnell Jr. did not mince his words when delivering the verdict. He harshly criticised the government, stating that the policy threw lives into indeterminate legal limbo. He accused the immigration agency of ignoring the law.

Judge McConnell said the government used fake national security concerns to mask anti-immigrant sentiments. He made a striking point, the restriction had nothing to do with anything these individuals had done wrong. It arose solely from the circumstances of their birth.

The court has now vacated the measures that created this widespread uncertainty. The judge stated that freezing applications instead of formally denying them was completely unlawful. This ruling effectively restores the legal standing of thousands of affected applicants.

This case highlights a broader shift in the administration's focus. While Trump originally campaigned on mass deportations of undocumented individuals, his administration has increasingly targeted legal immigration pathways. However, this ruling is just one of several federal court pushbacks against the White House's recent immigration actions.

The Department of Homeland Security and immigration services are expected to issue new guidance following this ruling. The Trump administration is widely expected to appeal the decision, setting the stage for a fierce battle in a higher court.

But for now, the judge's decision stands. For tens of thousands of immigrants, it is a moment of deep relief.
