FG Launches AI Training for 11,700 Unity Schools Teachers

FG begins nationwide AI capacity-building programme for 11,700 Unity Colleges teachers to transform teaching and digital learning.

The Federal Government has launched a nationwide Artificial Intelligence capacity-building programme for teachers in Federal Unity Colleges.

About 11,700 educators are expected to benefit from the initiative, which is designed to equip teachers with cutting-edge digital skills and transform classroom teaching across the country. 

The programme took a major step forward on Thursday with the signing of the Terms of Reference between the Federal Ministry of Education and ICEDT Consult Limited.

The agreement paves the way for full national implementation.

It will be implemented through the Ministry’s Education Support Services Department. The initiative is part of the Federal Government’s broader plan to modernise education, strengthen teacher professionalism, and prepare students for a technology-driven economy in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Abuja, the Director of Education Support Services Department, Gabriel Amudipe, described the programme as a strategic investment in teachers and the future of education.

He said the national rollout follows the success of an earlier pilot phase. He also commended ICEDT Consult Limited for creating a structured model that will ensure effective coordination across the six geopolitical zones.

Amudipe stressed that the high standards recorded during the pilot must be maintained. He urged monitoring officers to carry out their duties professionally and ensure strict compliance with the agreement.

He reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to supporting innovations that improve learning outcomes and promote responsible use of emerging technologies in schools.

Earlier, the Deputy Director of the department, Oladele Fapohunda, said the programme is a strategic intervention to deepen digital innovation in Unity Colleges. He noted that collaboration among all stakeholders will be key to its success.

Providing more details, the Head of Strategic Partnerships and Learning Scientist at ICEDT Consult Limited, Dr Abdulrahman Orosanya, said the national expansion was approved after a successful pilot.

The pilot was conducted in six Federal Unity Colleges representing the six geopolitical zones, with 100 teachers per Unity School participating. 

According to him, the pilot proved that AI can significantly improve lesson planning, classroom delivery, assessment methods, and teachers’ overall productivity.

He explained that the nationwide rollout will strengthen teachers’ digital competence and support the Federal Government’s vision of a technology-driven education system that produces globally competitive learners with 21st-century skills.

The ceremony ended with the formal signing of the Terms of Reference by officials of the Ministry and ICEDT Consult Limited.

Beyond the 11,700 direct beneficiaries, thousands of students are expected to benefit through improved teaching practices, increased digital innovation, and responsible use of AI in learning.

The Federal Ministry of Education restated its commitment to partner with relevant stakeholders to deliver inclusive, equitable, and future-ready education nationwide.
