The Osun State Police Command has revealed that Afrobeats star Davido was the intended target of the attack that disrupted the convoy of Governor Ademola Adeleke in Osogbo on Wednesday, August 19.
The incident happened shortly after Governor Adeleke received his Certificate of Return from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and proceeded to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo.
According to the police, Davido and some of the governor's children were travelling in the convoy when armed men allegedly attempted to reach the singer, leading to a violent confrontation with security personnel.
Gunfire Erupts Near Ataoja's Palace
Eyewitnesses reported panic around the palace area after suspected gunmen opened fire on the governor's convoy. Security operatives attached to the governor immediately returned fire, forcing residents and visitors to flee for safety.
The exchange of gunfire briefly disrupted movement around the palace before the attackers fled the scene.
Police Link Suspects to Eye Confraternity
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, said preliminary investigations suggest members of the Eye Confraternity were behind the attack.
He disclosed that a suspected gang member, identified as Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as "Small Rugged," allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was stopped by the singer's security team.
Police described the suspect as an ex-convict, a suspected notorious thug and a member of the confraternity.
The resistance reportedly sparked a confrontation, attracting other suspected gang members in the area. The group allegedly blocked the entrance to the Ataoja's palace and temporarily hindered the movement of Governor Adeleke's convoy.
One Person Killed During Incident
The police further disclosed that the suspects later left the palace vicinity but allegedly opened fire again while moving through the Itaolokan area of Osogbo.
A 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, was reportedly hit by gunfire during the incident.
Police officers who responded to the distress call found the victim critically injured and rushed him to the University Teaching Hospital in Osogbo for emergency treatment.
Despite efforts by medical personnel, Yusuf was confirmed dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.
Investigation Underway
The Osun State Police Command said a full investigation has commenced to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack and identify everyone involved.
Authorities added that efforts have been intensified to track down the fleeing suspects and ensure they are arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The police also urged residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could aid the ongoing investigation.
