A 26-year-old Nigerian bodybuilder based in the United States, Michael Chidozie, has died weeks after he was allegedly shot by his wife during an argument at their home in Houston, Texas.

Police said the shooting happened on March 21. Chidozie died last week from injuries sustained in the incident.

His wife, Keaiirra Shavoiyae Chidozie, 28, was arrested after the shooting and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Police said the charge had not been upgraded as of the time of his death.

Police said the couple were arguing inside their house when Keaiirra went into their bedroom. She picked up a pistol and shot Chidozie four times.

He was shot once in the arm, once in the chest and twice in the torso. He was left on the bedroom floor.

Officers found him with gunshot wounds and rushed him to Ben Taub Hospital. Keaiirra was found with their two children, aged three and two, in a nearby parking lot.

Witnesses had called police after seeing her running around frantically and asking for help.

Keaiirra told police she shot her husband in self-defence because she feared for her life when he followed her into the bedroom. Police said it remains unclear what led to the argument.

Friends of the couple said they had never witnessed violence between them and were shocked that a disagreement escalated into a deadly incident.

Keaiirra was later released on bail. She is expected to appear in court on May 23. The children are being cared for by other family members.

Chidozie's family are trying to raise $70,000 to bring his body back to Nigeria for burial. They said it was his dream to one day return to his homeland.

"His passing has left a profound void in the lives of all who knew and loved him. He was a devoted father, a cherished son, and a dear friend to many," the family said.

"Chidozie's kind heart, infectious laughter, and unwavering love for his family will forever be remembered and cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know him."
