The Institute of Management and Technology (IMT) has taken a firm stance against academic malpractice, with at least 28 students set to face disciplinary action for allegedly bribing lecturers to inflate their grades, a practice popularly known as "sorting."
IMT's Rector, Professor Gozie Ogbodo, revealed this during a visit by PhD students from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT)’s Institute for Peace, Conflict, and Development Studies (IPCDS). Led by Dr. Ben Nwoye, the delegation engaged in discussions on fostering peace and academic integrity.
Ogbodo commended IPCDS for its role in shaping future peace ambassadors while expressing IMT’s willingness to collaborate on conflict resolution initiatives. He emphasized the need for modern approaches to dispute resolution, citing the destructive impact of unresolved conflicts globally.
The Rector outlined sweeping reforms implemented since his appointment, including a "state of emergency" on outdated curricula. Thanks to the support of Governor Peter Mbah,he confirmed that all 65 academic programs at IMT have recently secured full accreditation from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), the courses were subjected to accreditation on April 4, 5 and 6th, which is a historic first for the institution.
To uphold standards, Ogbodo has enforced strict measures: He said,
- Mandatory 70% lecture attendance for exam eligibility.
- Daily monitoring of both lecturers and students to ensure compliance.
- Students without proper attire are denied entry as regards departmental uniform policy.
- Anti-sorting policy, penalizing both bribing students and complicit lecturers.
"Any student attending 50% of lectures should have no reason to resort to sorting," Ogbodo stated, revealing that 28 cases are currently under investigation.
Dr. Nwoye, a former APC chairman in Enugu, stressed the importance of peace in national progress. He described the visit as part of IPCDS’s practical training, aligning with its mission to address real-world challenges beyond theoretical discourse.
With these measures, IMT signals a new era of accountability, aiming to restore academic excellence while fostering a culture of integrity.
