The Federal Ministry of Environment has raised a fresh alarm over possible flooding in parts of Northern Nigeria, warning that several states may experience heavy rainfall between August 25 and 29, 2025.
In a circular signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, the ministry’s National Flood Early Warning Center placed nine states on red alert.
The states include Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Adamawa, and Borno. Authorities urged residents and stakeholders in the affected areas to remain on high alert and report any incidents as they unfold.
“Certain northern settlements are likely to experience heavy rainfall that may lead to flooding within the period August 25 to 29, 2025. We call on relevant stakeholders on the Centre’s platform to give feedback of any emerging situation in their various states,” the circular read.
According to the warning, Adamawa and Katsina recorded the highest number of towns at risk. In Adamawa, Mubi, Shelleng, and Abba-Kumbo were listed, while in Katsina, Katsina town, Kaita, and Bindawa made the watchlist.
Other vulnerable locations include Gwaram (Jigawa), Nafada (Gombe), Ngala (Borno), Sumaila (Kano), Anka (Zamfara), and Makira (Sokoto). In Bauchi, two major towns, Azare and Jama’are, are also under close watch.
This fresh alert follows earlier warnings issued across seven Northern states, where communities along the floodplains of the River Niger were advised to prepare for possible evacuations due to rising water levels.
