Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is grieving the loss of his mother, Jacklyn “Jackie” Bezos, who passed away at the age of 78.
The Bezos Family Foundation announced her death on Thursday, revealing that she died peacefully at her home in Miami. While the cause of death was not disclosed, the family noted she had been battling Lewy Body Dementia since 2020.
In its statement, the Foundation described Jackie as “the true meaning of grit, determination, kindness and service to others,” praising her husband, Mike Bezos, for his unwavering support throughout her illness.
Jeff Bezos, in a touching Instagram post, reflected on his mother’s early journey of raising him as a teenager. “She pounced on the job of loving me with ferocity,” he wrote, recalling how she welcomed his adoptive father, Mike, and later his siblings, into a circle of love and protection. He added that she died surrounded by family, including her children, grandchildren, and her husband — after a long battle with the disease.
Bezos’ wife, Lauren Sánchez, reposted his tribute on Instagram, adding a broken heart emoji.
Jacklyn had Jeff at 17 with her first husband, Ted Jorgensen, but their marriage ended when Jeff was a toddler. She later married Mike Bezos, who, along with her, famously invested just under $250,000 in Jeff’s new venture, Amazon, in 1995 — an investment that became part of tech history.
She is survived by her husband, children, and grandchildren.
May her soul rest in peace.
