Peter Obi slams FG over another hike in passport fees

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has criticised the Federal Government over the sudden increase in international passport fees.

In a statement shared on his X handle Thursday, Obi said the administration’s constant imposition of financial burdens on citizens has become “legendary.”

The new pricing means a 32-page passport booklet will now cost N100,000, while a 64-page booklet will go for N200,000.

Note, that the last increase was done in August, 2024. Just one year ago, where a 32 page passport document was increased to N50,000 from N35,000 while a 64 page passport was increased to N100,000 from the previous price of N75,000.

This is unfair, since Nigerians do not react about any important matters of state, this will definitely continue.

The former governor of Anambra State, stressing that it comes at a time when the new minimum wage is pegged at N70,000.

He argued that it was shameful for the price of a single passport to surpass the monthly earnings of an average Nigerian worker.

According to him, rather than easing the hardship facing citizens, the government continues to make life more difficult by shifting the weight of economic challenges onto the masses.
