Tagawa, famous for bringing the Mortal Kombat antagonist to life across films, TV shows, and video games, died on Thursday in Santa Barbara, California. He was 75 years old.

According to confirmation from his family to news outlets, the cause of death was complications arising from a stroke. It is a moment of deep sadness for the global film community.

His background prepared him well for the action roles he often took up. Tagawa was a trained martial artist, particularly in the Japanese sword fighting discipline of Kendo.

Born in Japan, his personal journey was deep. He moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, when he was just five years old. In an interview years later, he spoke about how "pretty tough" it was being Japanese in the American South back in the 1950s.
