Kano family murder investigation deepens as police confirm a nephew as the prime suspect behind the deadly attack.
Fresh details have emerged in the tragic killing of a Kano housewife and her six children, as police confirm that a close family member is the prime suspect.
A Kano-based newscaster, Sadiya Yahaya Isah, shared a video from the scene showing Umar Auwalu, the main suspect, during the evacuation of the victims’ bodies. Umar is a nephew of the deceased woman.
According to the Kano State Police Command, Umar allegedly planned and coordinated the attack that led to the deaths of his aunt, Fatima Abubakar, and her six children.
The victims were identified as Maimuna Haruna, Aisha Haruna, Bashir Haruna, Abubakar Haruna, Faruk Haruna, and Abdulsalam Haruna. The incident occurred inside their residence last Saturday.
Police confirmed that two of the children, including a newborn, were later found inside a well close to the house, deepening public shock over the incident.
Images circulating online show the suspect participating in the evacuation process, including carrying one of the victims, a development that has raised serious concerns and questions among residents.
Speaking on the investigation, police spokesperson CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said the arrests followed intelligence-led operations carried out between the night of January 17 and the early hours of January 18.
The operations were conducted under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, leading to the arrest of the principal suspect and other accomplices.
Kiyawa disclosed that Umar confessed to organizing the attack and claimed the same group had been involved in other violent crimes across parts of the Kano metropolis.
Items recovered during the operation include clothing with suspected blood stains, mobile phones belonging to the deceased woman, a cutlass, a club, and cash believed to have been taken from the home.
Police say investigations are ongoing, while suspects remain in custody as authorities work to uncover the full scope of the alleged criminal network.
