Nigeria has lost a serving federal lawmaker. Nigerian Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who represented Nasarawa North Senatorial District.
A Nigerian Senator, Godiya Akwashiki (SDP/Nasarawa North), has passed away at the age of 52 in an Indian hospital after battling a prolonged illness.
His death occurred on December 31, 2025, according to a family source who confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday.
The source, who spoke from Nassarawa Eggon on condition of anonymity, described the senator’s death as a major loss to the people of Nasarawa North.
The family source noted that Senator Akwashiki’s demise has created a significant vacuum in the senatorial district, given his strong commitment to development projects and empowerment programmes.
“In the history of Nasarawa North, Senator Akwashiki was the best senator the zone ever produced due to his purposeful leadership,” the source said.
He added that Akwashiki’s projects were spread across the constituency, describing him as the only senator from the zone who successfully re-contested and won a second term.
Before his election to the Nigerian Senate in 2019, Akwashiki had an extensive political career at the state level. He previously served as the Majority Leader and later as the Deputy Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly.
His legislative career was marked by grassroots-focused initiatives and constituency-based projects aimed at improving livelihoods across Nasarawa North.
NAN reports that the late Nigerian Senator was born on August 3, 1973, in Angba Iggah, Nassarawa Eggon Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
