Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has announced the withdrawal of all court cases he instituted against individuals over alleged defamation, including Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, describing the decision as a New Year gesture.
Akpabio disclosed this during a New Year service held to usher in 2026, where he said the decision was inspired by reflection and spiritual guidance.
“I Listened to the Priest” — Akpabio
Speaking at the service, the Senate President revealed that he had nearly nine cases pending in court against various individuals.
“I had almost nine cases in court against some individuals who defamed me, who lied against me, who slandered my name,” Akpabio said.
“But I listened to the priest and suddenly realized he was talking to me, so I hereby direct my solicitor to withdraw all lawsuits against them.”
He explained that the move was taken in the spirit of the New Year, signalling reconciliation and closure.
Godswill Akpabio has been engaged in legal battles with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan following allegations of sexual harassment made against him by the Kogi lawmaker.
Akpabio has consistently denied the allegations, describing them as false and damaging to his reputation.
The withdrawal of the lawsuits is now expected to bring an end to the legal and public controversies surrounding the matter.
Political observers believe the decision could ease tensions within the Senate and reduce distractions ahead of the 2026 legislative calendar.
It also signals a possible shift towards reconciliation and de-escalation of public disputes among senior lawmakers.
