Keion White shooting raises fresh concerns as the 49ers defender is hospitalized after being hit by gunfire in San Francisco.
San Francisco 49ers defensive end Keion White is recovering in hospital after being shot in the ankle just hours after the Super Bowl ended.
The 27-year-old NFL player sustained a non-life-threatening injury and is currently undergoing surgery at a local medical facility.
The 49ers confirmed the incident in a brief statement released to The Athletic, saying the team would provide further updates on White’s condition when appropriate.
According to initial reports, the shooting occurred during a public event in San Francisco early Monday morning.
Authorities say an altercation broke out between two separate groups inside a business.
Police clarified that White was not involved in the dispute. He was reportedly injured after shots were fired by an unknown individual during the confrontation.
“A preliminary investigation revealed a verbal altercation occurred between two groups inside a business,” a spokesperson for the San Francisco Police Department said. “The victim was injured when shots were fired by an unknown suspect.”
The incident adds to a troubling list of NFL players affected by gun violence in recent months. In November, cornerback Kris Boyd was shot outside a New York restaurant following a verbal argument.
In August 2024, White’s 49ers teammate Ricky Pearsall was also shot during an attempted armed robbery in San Francisco but later recovered.
As of the time of this report, Keion White has not issued a personal statement, and investigations into the shooting remain ongoing.
