Umuahia is currently in deep mourning following a devastating road accident that claimed the lives of 14 traders. What was meant to be a joyful trip to a colleague's wedding in Enugu ended in a horrific tragedy on Saturday evening.
The victims, who were well-known business owners at the Isi Gate Market area, specifically along Bonny Street and Owerri Road, had traveled to Enugu to celebrate a traditional marriage.
Disaster struck around 6:45 PM on the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway during their return journey. Their Toyota Coaster bus collided with a Mercedes truck, leading to a scene of total chaos.
According to reports, 11 passengers died instantly at the crash site. Three others later passed away due to the severity of their injuries, while several more are still in critical condition, fighting for survival in the hospital.
The Enugu State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Franklin Agbakoba, confirmed the heartbreaking incident to newsmen.
By Sunday afternoon, a heavy cloud of gloom hung over Umuahia. The usually busy Bonny Street was deserted as many shop owners stayed away in honor of their deceased friends and neighbors.
The few traders seen at the market were visibly shaken, with many in tears as they struggled to process the sudden loss of so many vibrant members of their community at once.
