US rap star Nicki Minaj initiates a legal battle against Nigerian influencer Dr Penking, citing copyright breaches and targeted harassment on X.
United States rap sensation Nicki Minaj has formally initiated legal proceedings against Nigerian social media commentator, Dr Penking, over allegations of cyberbullying and copyright violations.
The dispute erupted on Saturday following a post by the influencer on X (formerly Twitter). He shared an archival video of the Grammy-nominated artist with a caption suggesting she had "gotten old" and should consider retirement.
Minaj swiftly challenged the unauthorised use of her content. In a series of responses, the rapper questioned whether the influencer possessed the requisite permissions to circulate the footage for the purpose of harassment. She subsequently confirmed his inclusion in an ongoing lawsuit.
"Do you have permission to use this video that I filmed years ago to harass me on this or any platform? You’ve just been added to the suit," Minaj wrote before deleting the post.
Unmoved by the threat of litigation, Dr Penking maintained that his remarks fall under the ambit of free speech. He asserted that his legal team is prepared to contest the matter, arguing that his comments regarding the artist’s age and career trajectory constitute personal opinion rather than a criminal offence.
"Freedom of speech and expression is supreme in all constitutions in the world," he stated. He further argued that the information regarding her age is publicly accessible and refused to be "intimidated" by the artist's celebrity status.
This development highlights the growing friction between global intellectual property rights and the unregulated nature of social media commentary in the World today..jpeg)
