Theron revealed that her father returned home drunk and extremely violent. He forced his way into their house, threatening to kill everyone inside.
"He was going to kill us," Theron recalled. She described how she and her mother used their bodies to barricade a bedroom door. Her father then fired bullets through the door, which miraculously missed them.
In a desperate bid to survive, Theron’s mother grabbed a gun and fired back. The shot killed her father instantly. The authorities later ruled the killing as self-defense.
Despite the trauma, the Oscar winner says she is no longer haunted by the event. She has chosen to speak out to help other victims of domestic violence feel less isolated.
