A seismic shift occurred in the Green Chamber on Tuesday as 27 lawmakers defected, altering the power dynamics ahead of the 2027 polls.
The political space of the Green Chamber was significantly altered on Tuesday. Twenty-seven members of the House of Representatives formally defected to different respective political parties.
This wave of realignments is considered one of the largest shifts in the 10th National Assembly.
The notices of defection were read by the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, during the plenary session.
The All Progressives Congress (APC) emerged as the primary beneficiary of this legislative movement. Fourteen new members were absorbed by the ruling party.
This contingent includes eight lawmakers from Kano State who were previously members of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
With these new additions, the APC now commands a formidable block of approximately 280 out of 360 seats. This numerical dominance places the party within reach of a two-thirds supermajority.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) also recorded substantial gains. Eight new lawmakers were secured by the party. This group comprises five former members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), two from the Labour Party (LP), and one from the APC.
Punchng reported, the proceedings were witnessed by several high-ranking stakeholders. The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, was present in the gallery.
He was accompanied by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, and the National Chairman of the APC, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje. Their presence underscores the importance of the sub-national interests currently driving federal realignments.
The Action Peoples Party (APP) gained two members from the PDP and LP. Similarly, the Accord Party added two lawmakers previously affiliated with the PDP.
Internal crises within their former parties were cited by the defecting lawmakers as the justification for their exit. Political observers noted that these movements represent early tactical repositioning for the 2027 general elections.
