TV host Gayle King reveals how she caught her ex-husband cheating with her own best friend in their matrimonial home.
Television host Gayle King is opening up about one of the most painful moments of her life. The veteran broadcaster recently shared the story of how she caught her ex-husband in a shocking betrayal.
Speaking on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast on Wednesday, King revisited the incident that shattered her marriage to William Bumpus. She explained that the drama unfolded after an unexpected early return from the airport.
King told the podcast hosts that she knew something was wrong the moment she stepped into the house. The security alarm was switched on, which was highly unusual because her husband never used it.
Before she could even process the situation, Bumpus rushed out of their bedroom. He was wrapped in a towel and tried desperately to block her from entering the room, warning her that someone was inside.
But King did not back down. She pushed her way into the room and searched the space. Hidden behind the door was a woman, also covered in a towel. The gut-wrenching discovery was that the woman hiding in her bedroom was her very own best friend.
The "CBS Mornings" anchor said she confronted the woman, asking how she could betray her in such a cruel way. However, the most unbelievable part was yet to come.
King revealed that Bumpus actually drove the woman to the train station afterward. He assisted her in getting back to her own husband.
Overwhelmed by the double betrayal, King reached out to her famous best friend, Oprah Winfrey, to pour out her heart. Winfrey reportedly told her that the shameful incident was a clear sign that the unfaithfulness went much deeper than she imagined.
The marriage never recovered from the heartbreak. The couple officially divorced in 1993, bringing an end to their 11-year union.
