Peter Obi Secures NDC Presidential Ticket for 2027 Poll

Peter Obi emerges as the sole NDC presidential aspirant for 2027, facing a straightforward affirmation at the party's primaries.

Peter Obi affirmed as NDC presidential candidate for 2027 election

Peter Obi's path to the 2027 presidential election is taking firm shape. Today, the Nigeria Democratic Congress holds its nationwide primaries, and Obi stands as the sole presidential aspirant.

Delegates from all 36 states will formally affirm him as the party's flagbearer. With no other contenders in the race, it is a direct ratification.

But today's exercise goes beyond the top job. The NDC is also conducting primaries for governorship, National Assembly, and state assembly positions across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

Getting to this point was not without hiccups. NDC National Chairman Moses Cleopas noted that the Eid-el-Kabir public holidays caused serious logistical headaches. Flights were grounded, leaving aspirants and party officials stranded in Abuja after their screening.

To manage the disruption, the party shifted all primaries to May 29. This adjustment was confirmed in a joint statement by Cleopas and National Secretary Barrister Ikenna Alex-Morgan Enekweizu.

The schedule for the day is well structured. The presidential affirmation takes the lead. Next are the National Assembly primaries, followed by state assemblies, and finally the governorship races.

Obi's support base is already mobilizing. Yunusa Tanko, National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, has called for unity and discipline among members. He described their alignment with the NDC as a deliberate and strategic move.

This marks a new chapter for Obi, who previously ran under the Labour Party in the last general election. His clearance for the NDC ticket was earlier confirmed by Senator Sam Egwu, who chaired the party's screening committee.

With Obi set to officially carry the NDC flag, the stage is gradually being set for a fierce political battle in 2027.
