Italian police arrest two Nigerians and three African migrants over the alleged abduction and gang rape of a Colombian tourist in Rome.
Italian authorities have apprehended five African migrants, including two Nigerians, over the alleged abduction and gang rape of a Colombian tourist in Rome.
The disturbing incident reportedly occurred on May 19. The 32-year-old victim was enjoying her time at a restaurant in the Italian capital when a man approached her.
He reportedly offered to sell her hashish, a cannabis product. Instead, she was lured away and bundled into a van.
She was taken to an abandoned building on the eastern outskirts of Rome. For about 72 hours, the woman was held captive. Authorities say she was repeatedly raped, drugged, and threatened by her captors.
The victim eventually managed to escape the building. A passerby found her half-naked on the pavement and immediately alerted emergency responders.
Acting on the report, the police raided the property and arrested five suspects. The two Nigerians arrested were identified as 29-year-old Isibor Wisdom and 39-year-old Paul Nwabueze.
Three other suspects were also taken into custody. They include 29-year-old Saidykhan Lamin and 38-year-old Karamba Kanteh, both from Gambia, alongside 43-year-old Malian national Harouna Traore.
All five suspects have been charged with gang rape. The charge was aggravated due to the victim's vulnerable condition at the time. They currently remain in police custody.
However, the investigation is far from over. The police are actively hunting for other individuals believed to be involved in the crime. This includes the man who initially lured the woman from the restaurant and the driver of the van.
During the raid on the abandoned property, officers also stumbled upon 22 undocumented migrants. Eleven of them have already been transferred to detention centres, where they await deportation proceedings.
