A well-known family in Houston, Texas, has been found dead in a devastating incident police are calling a murder-suicide.
On Monday evening, authorities discovered the bodies of 52-year-old Matthew Mitchell, his 39-year-old wife Thy, and their two young children. The kids have been identified as eight-year-old Maya and four-year-old Max.
The tragedy unfolded at their home in the upscale River Oaks neighborhood. Police were called to the house around 5:30 p.m. for a welfare check. A relative and a babysitter raised the alarm after not hearing from the family since Sunday night.
Officers who entered the residence found all four family members dead from gunshot wounds. According to the police statement, evidence at the scene indicates Matthew shot his wife and children before turning the weapon on himself.
While the medical examiner is still working on formal identifications, Thy’s sister, Ly Mai, confirmed the heartbreaking loss on social media. She pleaded for privacy as the family mourns.
The Mitchells were prominent faces in Houston’s restaurant industry. They founded the popular Travelers Table and the newer Traveler's Cart, which focused on international street food.
Their culinary success drew national attention. The Food Network featured their restaurants on "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" with Guy Fieri. One of their chefs even defeated celebrity chef Bobby Flay on his own television show.
Before stepping into the kitchen, both Matthew and Thy had impressive careers. Matthew was a former journalist who worked in London, Paris, and New York. He later became a pharmaceutical CEO after studying at Rice University.
Thy grew up in her family’s Vietnamese restaurant business. She later took on top human resources leadership roles at several Fortune 500 hospitality and retail companies.
Their shared love for food and global travel built their businesses and their bond. Now, the Houston community and the wider culinary world are struggling to come to terms with this immense loss.
