Cape Verde's Unbeaten World Cup Run

Cape Verde stay unbeaten vs Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia on World Cup debut to book July 3 clash with Argentina.

Cape Verde Blue Sharks celebrate unbeaten World Cup 2026 run ahead of Argentina clash

If you love an underdog story, look no further than Cape Verde.

The Blue Sharks are making their first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in 2026, and they are doing it in style. No defeats. No fear. Just pure heart.

They booked their ticket back in October 2025, beating Eswatini 3-0 to top their African qualifying group. That win made them the second-smallest nation ever to reach a World Cup.

Fast forward to June 2026, and the island nation of just over 500,000 people is the talk of the tournament.

Unbeaten in the group of giants

Drawn in Group H with Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia, many expected Cape Verde to pack their bags early. Instead, coach Pedro Leitao Brito's men went three games without losing.

June 15: Cape Verde 0-0 Spain — goalkeeper Vozinha produced a seven-save masterclass against the 2010 champions.

June 21: Cape Verde 2-2 Uruguay — they came from behind twice to snatch a point.

June 26: Cape Verde 0-0 Saudi Arabia — a gritty stalemate in Houston sealed it.

Three draws, three points, second place in the group. Spain topped it with seven points after beating Uruguay 1-0 on the final day.

With that 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia, Cape Verde became the smallest nation in World Cup history to reach the knockout stage. They are also only the third African side ever to go through a group stage unbeaten.

Next Match: Messi and Argentina

The reward for their bravery? A date with the world champions.

Cape Verde will face Lionel Messi's Argentina in the Round of 32 on Friday, July 3, 2026. Kick-off is 6:00 p.m. ET at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami — Messi's adopted home city.

It is a true David vs Goliath tie. Argentina topped Group J and are chasing a fourth World Cup title. Cape Verde came into the tournament ranked 67th in the world with +165 odds just to get out of the group.

But this team does not read scripts. Led by veteran Ryan Mendes, their all-time top scorer, and the heroic Vozinha in goal, they have already shattered expectations.

Win or lose against Argentina, the Blue Sharks have already made history. On July 3 in Miami, they get a chance to make it marvelous.
