Movement will be restricted across Enugu North this Saturday as the state prepares for a crucial senatorial bye-election.

The Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, announced the order in a public notice on Friday. He said the restriction will run from 6am to 4pm to allow for a peaceful and orderly vote.

The directive covers the six local government areas that make up the district — Igbo-Etiti, Igbo-Eze North, Igbo-Eze South, Nsukka, Udenu and Uzo-Uwani. INEC will conduct voting in 1,488 polling units spread across the zone.

Only people on essential election duty will be allowed to move. This includes INEC officials, security personnel, accredited observers, journalists and health workers on emergency call. The SSG has issued similar movement orders for previous polls in the state.

Onyia urged residents to stay within their communities during the hours and to come out peacefully to vote. He asked political parties, candidates and supporters to play by the rules before, during and after the exercise.

Security agencies have been directed to enforce the restriction and maintain law and order at all polling centres.

The bye-election is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026. It follows the death of Senator Okey Ezea, the Labour Party senator representing the district, who passed away on November 18, 2025.

INEC says it is 87% ready for the poll, with non-sensitive materials already deployed and BVAS machines configured.
