A Kano State High Court has sentenced one Shuaibu Abdulkadir to death by hanging for the killing of a 23-year-old housewife, Rumasa'u Shuaibu.
The judgment was delivered on Friday, July 24, 2026, by Justice Farida Rabiu-Danbappa at the State High Court in Kano.
Justice Rabiu-Danbappa held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt. She found the defendant guilty of culpable homicide.
“I find Shuaibu Abdulkadir guilty. I hereby sentence you to death by hanging for culpable homicide. May Allah have mercy on your soul. You have 90 days to appeal,” the judge ruled.
The court heard that the offence was committed on April 6, 2025, at Farawa Quarters in Kano metropolis.
According to the prosecution counsel, Basiru Kabiru-Ali, the convict murdered the victim who was a friend to his girlfriend.
Abdulkadir, a resident of Chediyar Kuda in Shauchi Quarters, Kano, was arraigned on a charge of culpable homicide contrary to Section 221 of the Penal Code. He denied the charge.
To prove the case, the prosecution called three witnesses.
It also tendered seven exhibits before the court, including the confessional statement of the convict, a photograph of the deceased, and her mobile phone.
The defendant testified in his own defence. His counsel, Mustapha Idris, led his defence.
In his plea for mercy, Idris told the court that his client was a first-time offender. He said the convict had shown remorse for his actions and urged the court to temper justice with leniency.
The court, however, maintained that the evidence presented established guilt and imposed the maximum punishment provided by law.
