Paul Okoye Rudeboy counters brother Peter Okoye's French comment, says he is nobody without Igbo language and culture.
Days after his twin brother sparked a heated debate on social media, singer Paul Okoye, popularly known as Rudeboy, has made his own position clear on culture and language.
Paul declared that he is a nobody without his culture and native language. He said he remains 100 percent proudly Nigerian and 100 percent proudly Igbo.
His statement comes just days after his brother, Peter Okoye, also known as Mr P, defended his children for speaking French fluently in Paris and questioned the value of Nigerian languages.
Peter had shared a post from Paris where he admired how effortlessly his children speak French. When a follower asked if they could also speak Igbo, he responded, "And who naija language help? Make I hear word abeg".
The comment triggered instant backlash online. Peter doubled down and insisted that language choice is a personal family decision.
He further argued that speaking indigenous Nigerian languages had offered little practical benefit and that English remains Nigeria’s official language.
While Peter told critics to mind their business, Paul took a completely different path.
In a direct but calm message, the "Reason With Me" crooner said his identity is rooted in his Igbo heritage. For him, being Igbo and Nigerian is not something to hide or downplay.
The post has been interpreted by many fans as a subtle reply to his brother. Two brothers, same background, but two opposite views on the same issue.
This is not the first time Paul has stood up for local identity. In 2017, he publicly said people who mock others for speaking English with an Igbo, Hausa or Yoruba accent are illiterates. He maintained that accent is not a measure of intelligence.
Peter, on the other hand, argued that many of those criticizing him would also relocate abroad and raise their children outside Nigeria if they had the chance.
For Paul Okoye, the answer is simple. Language and culture are not optional. They are who he is.
