Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced a major appointment in his push for the 2027 general elections.
Atiku, who is now the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has named former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, as Deputy Chairman of the party’s Presidential Campaign Council.
The appointment was contained in the campaign council list approved by Atiku himself.
It comes at a time when El-Rufai is still in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
According to the structure released by the campaign, El-Rufai will not lead the council alone. He will serve as deputy to Kashim Ibrahim-Imam, who has been appointed Chairman of the council.
Senator Augustine Okwudiri Akobundu was also named as Director-General and Campaign Manager of the council.
Sources within the ADC campaign said El-Rufai’s role will be critical. He is expected to handle high-level political coordination and drive engagement with key stakeholders across the six geopolitical zones.
His appointment has drawn attention because of his current legal situation. The former governor remains in ICPC custody over an ongoing investigation.
The anti-graft agency is yet to conclude its proceedings against him.
Beyond the ICPC case, El-Rufai is also facing another legal battle. The Department of State Services (DSS) filed a separate case against him.
The DSS case is linked to allegations of interception of communications involving the National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu.
Despite the legal issues, the ADC campaign council said it is moving ahead with its strategy for 2027.
