The Department of State Services has arrested Faisal Abdulrasheed Maina, the fugitive son of former Pension Reform Task Team chairman Abdulrasheed Maina, and handed him over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Security sources cited by Zagazola Makama said DSS operatives picked up Faisal Maina in the Karsana area of Abuja after he secretly returned to Nigeria.
One of the sources said his arrest followed credible intelligence.
"His arrest followed credible intelligence which indicated that Faisal had secretly returned to the country," the source said.
Faisal Maina arrest follows secret return to Abuja
Faisal Maina had been on the run since 2020 after the EFCC filed a three-count charge against him bordering on money laundering and conspiracy.
He was accused of violating his bail conditions and fleeing the country while his trial was ongoing.
The trial continued in his absence. In 2021, Justice Okon Abang convicted him and sentenced him to 14 years’ imprisonment.
The court ordered that he should be arrested wherever he was found in Nigeria and remanded in a correctional centre to serve his sentence.
It also directed the Federal Government to take lawful steps to secure his extradition if he was found outside the country.
Handover to enforce 14-year sentence
Another security source said the handover to the EFCC would allow enforcement of the judgment.
"The handover of Faisal to the EFCC is expected to facilitate the enforcement of the court’s judgment and ensure that he serves his sentence in accordance with the law," the source said.
The EFCC is now expected to take steps to enforce the court order and ensure he serves the sentence.
