England captain Harry Kane has won the 2026 Ballon d'Or, ending a 25-year wait for an English winner of football's most prestigious individual prize.
The Bayern Munich striker was named the world's outstanding male footballer for the 2025/26 season at the 70th edition of the awards. The ceremony was staged at the London Palladium, the first time the event has been held outside France or Switzerland.
The honour is presented annually by France Football to recognise the best performer in the men's game.
OBGist gathered that Kane finished ahead of Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona teenager Lamine Yamal in the final voting. Both players were listed among the leading contenders after strong seasons for club and country.
At 33, Kane has become only the fifth Englishman to lift the trophy. He now joins Sir Stanley Matthews, who won the inaugural edition in 1956, Sir Bobby Charlton in 1966, Kevin Keegan in 1978 and 1979, and Michael Owen in 2001.
Record campaign seals award
According to information obtained by OBGist, Kane delivered the most productive season of his career, scoring 73 goals in 65 appearances for Bayern Munich and England.
Findings by OBGist indicate that 61 of those goals came for Bayern, with 12 scored for the Three Lions. His goals powered the German side to three honours - the Bundesliga title, the DFB-Pokal and the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup.
Kane also finished among the leading scorers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His contribution helped England secure third place, the national team's best finish at the tournament since winning it in 1966.
In addition to the main prize, Kane received the Gerd Müller Trophy for the best striker in men's football. It is the second time he has claimed the award after sharing it with Mbappé in 2024.
Kane, Tuchel react
Speaking after receiving the award, Kane described the past season as the peak of his professional career and credited his teammates and coaches for his success.
"It was an incredible year for me last year – to score the amount of goals I did was something I'm extremely proud of. It was the best season of my career without a doubt," Kane said.
He thanked colleagues at Bayern Munich and within the England setup, including Vincent Kompany and Thomas Tuchel, for their roles in his development.
England manager Thomas Tuchel congratulated his captain and said the recognition was merited.
"Congratulations Harry on a deserved Ballon d'Or! I ran out of superlatives to describe your performances a long time ago, but I'm delighted to see that you have now been formally recognised by the football world," Tuchel said.
The England boss noted that Kane's triumph carries added significance as the first English success since Owen's win in 2001.
Historic milestone
OBGist understands that the latest honour adds another major milestone to Kane's career. Already England's all-time leading scorer and one of Europe's most prolific centre-forwards, he has now secured the game's top individual award.
His victory also marks the first time a Bundesliga-based player has won the Ballon d'Or since Matthias Sammer in 1996. He is the first Bayern Munich player to receive it since Karl-Heinz Rummenigge in 1981.
Elsewhere at the ceremony, Spain midfielder Alexia Putellas won the Women's Ballon d'Or, while England winger Bukayo Saka was presented with the Socrates Award for his humanitarian work.
