Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), says he held talks with British government officials and members of the Nigerian community in London, with leadership failure and corruption at the centre of the discussions.
Obi announced this in a post on his X handle on Thursday. He did not name the officials he met in the post.
He said he flew into London from Basel, Switzerland, at 7am on Wednesday, October 21, and spent the day in meetings with stakeholders across the United Kingdom.
According to him, the day ended with a gathering organised by the head of COPDEM and the NDC’s Director of Diaspora Affairs, which drew other Nigerian stakeholders in the city.
Focus on accountability
Obi said the talks centred on bad leadership, corruption and the absence of accountability, which he described as the main obstacles to Nigeria’s progress.
He said Nigerians shared a collective duty to rescue the country from poor leadership, adding that these failures had left millions without access to quality healthcare, education and decent jobs.
The former Anambra State governor said Nigeria should be a country where every life counts, hard work is rewarded, and every citizen has an equal chance to succeed regardless of background or connections.
"We must build a Nigeria where the child of nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody," he said.
He added that the country must work for everyone, not a privileged few.
Second UK stop in days
The London engagements follow another diaspora event in the UK. Legit.ng, citing The Punch, reported that Obi addressed a town hall in Manchester on Sunday, October 18, 2026. There he urged Nigerians abroad to take the 2027 general election seriously and to influence relatives at home to do the same.
Obi was the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election.
