A Yobe State High Court sitting in Damaturu has sentenced Abubakar Musa, 45, to death by hanging for the killing of his wife, Ammi Adamu Mamman, according to reports.
Musa, popularly known as Daddy, was convicted of culpable homicide on Wednesday. The court reportedly held that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt.
How the case began
Mamman was found dead on January 4, 2024, at New Bra-Bra Estate in Damaturu. The police command in Yobe said a distress call reached the "C" Divisional Police Headquarters, Damaturu, at about 4:48am that day.
Police spokesman DSP Dungus Abdulkarim said at the time that early information indicated the couple were on the same bed when Mamman was stabbed in the neck with a sharp object. "The victim sustained severe bleeding, which led to her death," he said.
Musa was taken into custody for questioning, while detectives from the homicide unit of the State Criminal Investigation Department took over the case. The police statement also said the couple worked at Yobe State University.
Reactions after the killing
The death drew condemnation from Mamman’s workplace and civil society groups in the state. In its February 2024 newsletter, the university described her as a member of staff. It said Vice-Chancellor Professor Mala Mohammed Daura was saddened by her death and had urged security agencies to bring those responsible to justice.
Governor Mai Mala Buni also commiserated with the family and said anyone found culpable would face the law.
