Enugu Witnesses Landmark Healthcare Initiative as First Lady Remi Tinubu Empowers Midwives, Healthcare workers and petty traders in Enugu. This was a major boost as the First Lady, alongside governors' wives, distributed essential kits and financial support.
The move was to strengthen Nigeria’s healthcare system, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, accompanied by the wives of eight state governors and top federal officials, distributed 10,000 medical kits to midwives and nurses in Enugu. The event, held at the International Conference Centre (ICC), marked the final phase of a nationwide effort to equip frontline health workers.
A Gathering of Influential Women Leaders
The event saw the presence of prominent figures, including:
- Hajiya Nana Shettima (Wife of the Vice President)
- Barr. Chioma Uzodinma (First Lady of Imo State)
- Dr. Falmata Zulum (First Lady of Borno State)
- Mrs. Priscilla Otti (First Lady of Abia State)
- Dr. Claudia Sanwo-Olu (First Lady of Lagos State)
- Mrs. Bamidele Abiodun (First Lady of Ogun State)
- Mrs. Titilayo Adeleke (Wife of Osun State Governor)
- Dr. Gloria Diri (First Lady of Bayelsa State)
Benue State was also represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Women Affairs, Scholastica Ben-sor.
Boosting Healthcare with Essential Kits
Mrs. Tinubu announced that the initiative, under the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), has already distributed 50,000 scrubs and 50,000 pairs of Crocs across five geopolitical zones. The Enugu event completed the nationwide rollout, providing an additional 10,000 scrubs and 10,000 Crocs to midwives in the South-East.
"Our midwives and nurses deserve the best tools to deliver quality care. These kits symbolize our commitment to their well-being and professionalism," she stated.
Economic Support for Women Traders
Beyond healthcare, the First Lady unveiled a ₦50 million grant for 1,000 women petty traders in Enugu, offering ₦50,000 each to help revive their businesses.
Governor Mbah’s Commitment to Healthcare
Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, praised the initiative, emphasizing the state’s efforts to combat brain drain in the medical sector. "Our newly upgraded College of Nursing Sciences now trains 3,000 nurses annually, ensuring a steady healthcare workforce," he said.
Palliatives for the Vulnerable
In a separate event at Michael Okpara Square, food items were distributed to underprivileged families, with the First Lady’s representative, Hajiya Nana Shettima, overseeing the process.
A Call for National Unity
Earlier in the day, Mrs. Tinubu addressed leaders at the Enugu State House of Assembly, advocating for national cohesion through the Renewed Hope Initiative.
This landmark event not only reinforced Nigeria’s healthcare system but also demonstrated the power of collaborative leadership in driving meaningful change.
