Lagos Firefighters Rescue a Man Trapped in 80-Foot Well

Lagos Firefighters saved a 56-year-old man who is lucky to be alive after falling into a deep well in the Ikotun-Igando area of Lagos over the weekend, thanks to the swift intervention of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

The incident occurred at House 12, Aiyeola Street, near Governor Road, Molad Bus Stop. According to Maria Fadairo, Senior Public Affairs Officer of the agency, the Ejigbo Fire Station received a distress call and wasted no time in springing into action.

Upon arrival, the rescue team found the man trapped inside a narrow well, approximately 80 feet deep, located behind a bungalow housing eight rooms on a 648-square-metre property.

“It was a race against time,” Fadairo said in a statement issued on Tuesday, July 22. “But the team worked quickly and professionally to bring him back to the surface—alive and conscious.”

Preliminary findings point to possible negligence, though details of what exactly went wrong remain under investigation.

Reacting to the incident, the Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, emphasized the need for residents to contact safety agencies before engaging in risky or technical jobs.

“Alerting us ahead of such tasks allows our teams to be on standby and take precautionary measures. That simple step can save lives,” Adeseye advised.

The rescued man is currently receiving care, and officials are urging the public to prioritize safety, especially when dealing with potentially hazardous environments.
