The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has written a petition to several foreign embassies and international organisations over his prolonged incarceration.
Kanu, through his Special Counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, appealed to the global community to step in and ensure that Nigeria respects its own constitution and the rule of law in his case.
The petition was addressed to major embassies and bodies including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, European Union, ECOWAS Court, South Africa, Israel, Japan, Sweden, Amnesty International, Red Cross and several others.
In the letter, Ejimakor accused the Nigerian judiciary of “lawlessness,” citing the Supreme Court’s reversal of earlier judgments and the Court of Appeal’s stay of execution, which he described as illegal. He argued that these actions undermine constitutional supremacy and violate international human rights treaties.
Kanu is requesting urgent intervention to secure his release, pointing out that the Court of Appeal had discharged him of terrorism charges since October 13, 2022, but the judgment has not been enforced. He further asked that the international community hold the Nigerian government accountable, with possible sanctions against officials allegedly complicit in his detention.
He warned that his continued detention without compliance to court rulings amounts to persecution, stressing that his life remains at risk if nothing is done urgently.
