Governor Peter Mbah Dumps PDP, Joins APC in Enugu Political Shift
In a surprising turn of events, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mbah made the announcement on Tuesday, October 14, during a gathering in Enugu, ending weeks of speculation about his next political move.
“Today, after deep reflection, we have decided to leave the Peoples Democratic Party and join the All Progressives Congress,” the governor declared.
According to Mbah, his defection is not merely a political decision but a move to “reshape Enugu’s future” and “redefine the political direction of the state.”
“This decision is about our shared values, our collective growth, and the future of Enugu people. Leadership sometimes requires making difficult choices for the sake of progress,” he added.
The governor emphasized that his decision followed extensive consultations and consideration of the state’s developmental needs, saying it was time to “align with a structure that can fast-track Enugu’s transformation.”
As Mbah made the announcement, chants of “On your mandate we shall stand!” echoed from the crowd, with supporters waving APC flags in excitement. Moments later, the governor joined them in singing solidarity songs in honour of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, affirming his commitment to the APC-led government.
The defection marks a significant political shift in Enugu State, a region traditionally dominated by the PDP. Analysts believe Mbah’s move could alter the political balance ahead of future elections and strengthen APC’s presence in the South-East.
Although the PDP is yet to officially react, some party loyalists have described Mbah’s exit as “a major loss,” while others see it as a reflection of the broader realignment taking place across Nigerian politics.
Videos shared online captured the governor’s declaration moment and the jubilation that followed among his supporters.
