Bandits Kidnap Residents in Late-Night Kano Attacks

Bandits attack Kano communities, abducting residents in Biresawa despite prior alerts to security agencies.

Residents of Biresawa village in Tsanyawa Local Government Area of Kano State are in distress after bandits abducted at least eight people during a late-night raid, despite earlier warnings sent to security agencies.

The attack happened between 11pm and midnight on Monday. According to community sources, the gunmen moved quietly into the area and whisked away two men and six women without resistance.

One of the affected residents, Kabiru Usman, narrated that the attackers gained entry through neighbouring Tsundu village. He said the bandits came on foot, heavily armed, and took away his wife, Umma; his 17-year-old daughter, Fati; his brother’s wife; and two other women.

“We tried to confront them, but our weapons were nothing compared to their guns,” he said.

Usman added that villagers had already alerted the police and military earlier in the evening after receiving reports that the bandits were moving toward their communities. He expressed frustration that help did not come in time.

The attackers were also said to have entered Sarmawa, Yan Chibi, and Gano three nearby villages within Tsanyawa LGA.

A resident of Yan Chibi told reporters that around 50 gunmen, riding motorcycles, stormed the area while shooting into the air to scare people away.

“We all ran for our lives. When we returned, we discovered several people had been taken, mostly women,” he said, adding that more than 10 people across the affected communities were believed to have been abducted.

Some vigilantes and residents attempted to chase the attackers but lost track of them after they crossed into neighbouring Katsina State.

Locals say fear has gripped the entire axis for weeks as bandit activities spread from the nearby Shanono and Bagwai LGAs. Many families now sleep outside their homes or relocate at night to avoid being caught in similar attacks.

Attempts to reach the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Kiyawa, were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
