American singer and rapper, Lizzo, has opened up about the emotional battles behind her weight loss, revealing how constant discussions about her body once overshadowed her talent.
The 37-year-old entertainer, long celebrated as a bold voice in the body-positivity movement, said she grew tired of being reduced to just her size. In her first Substack post titled “Why is everybody losing weight and what do we do?”, Lizzo explained that she became frustrated that many people ignored her music and instead focused on her weight.
According to her, the criticism she faced over the years often felt like emotional abuse. She said the world placed her in a box, accusing her of making “fatness” her entire personality, even when she was only trying to be herself.
Despite the harsh comments and endless internet jokes, Lizzo said she pushed through and used humor as a coping mechanism. Yet, many still doubted her authenticity, believing she was only “performing” confidence.
The award-winning singer revealed that weight loss was never part of her plan until her mental health collapsed following a series of lawsuits from former employees.
In 2023, three dancers accused her of harassment and creating a toxic work environment, while a stylist alleged racial and sexual misconduct within her tour company—claims Lizzo has repeatedly denied.
She described that period as one of the darkest moments of her life. “I was severely depressed… it felt like the whole world turned its back on me,” she wrote. The emotional weight pushed her into isolation and suicidal thoughts.
In an attempt to regain control, she turned to Pilates, working exclusively with Black women instructors. The sessions became a form of physical and emotional therapy, and though she noticed some weight loss, she said it wasn’t intentional at first.
Through therapy, Lizzo discovered that her weight had served as a form of protection—an emotional shield she had carried for many years.
She began to release it deliberately, not out of vanity, but as a way of freeing herself from years of unresolved pain, including the loss of her father and past toxic relationships.
She explained that each kilogram shed felt symbolic, like releasing old energy rather than “losing weight.” Still, she admitted she wanted to feel lighter and more comfortable in her own body after years of carrying emotional and financial burdens.
Lizzo has previously spoken about using discipline and hard work to transform her body, while also acknowledging that she tried Ozempic and other GLP-1 medications at different points in her wellness journey.
Through it all, the singer says her transformation is less about appearance and more about healing—finally choosing herself after years of being the target of public scrutiny.
