Super Eagles exit World Cup race after a 1-1 draw and heartbreaking penalty defeat to DR Congo in Rabat.
Nigeria’s hopes of booking a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came crashing down on Sunday night after the Super Eagles fell to DR Congo in a tense penalty shootout in Rabat.
The game had started brightly for Nigeria. Frank Onyeka put the Eagles ahead in the third minute, raising early optimism among fans. But DR Congo settled into the match and found their equaliser in the 32nd minute through Meschak Elia, who punished a moment of defensive lapse.
Both sides pushed hard in extra time. Nigeria came close on several occasions, but poor finishing and a stubborn Congolese defence kept the scoreline level.
When the match went into penalties, the tide turned sharply against the Super Eagles. Calvin Bassey missed the opening kick, Semi Ajayi’s effort was saved, and Moses Simon also failed to convert. DR Congo, on the other hand, stayed composed and buried their chances, sealing their place in the intercontinental playoff.
It was a deeply frustrating night for Nigeria, especially after Victor Osimhen was forced off early in the second half due to injury. His absence left a visible gap in attack, despite spirited performances from Arokodare and Onyemaechi.
With the defeat, DR Congo marches on in their bid to reach the World Cup, while the Super Eagles head home nursing disappointment and reflecting on what could have been.
