The palace of the Alaafin of Oyo is set for a significant cultural event this Sunday. Oba Abimbola Owoade will confer high-profile chieftaincy titles on two prominent figures.

President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu, is to be installed as the “Okanlomo of Yorubaland.” The title, meaning “the beloved child,” signifies a deep endearment to the Yoruba people.

On the same occasion, Senator Abdul’Aziz Yari, representing Zamfara West, will receive the title “Obaloyin of Yorubaland.” The ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, December 21, 2025.

Confirmation of the event came directly from the Alaafin’s media office. His aide, Bode Durojaiye, verified the plans in a phone conversation, noting an official statement would be released shortly.

This development follows a series of notable chieftaincy conferments within the region. A few months prior, the Ooni of Ife bestowed a similar “Okanlomo” title on philanthropist Dotun Sanusi, which initially sparked a brief royal discourse.

Recently, the Ooni also honoured First Lady Senator Remi Tinubu with the historic title “Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua.” That ceremony drew a gathering of top traditional rulers and dignitaries from across the country.

The upcoming installations by the Alaafin continue a tradition of recognizing influence and contribution within the Yoruba cultural sphere. They highlight the enduring role of the monarchy in celebrating leadership and societal impact.

Preparations are now in full swing at the ancient Oyo palace for Sunday’s historic event.
